More power from my 305

I have a '84 Z/28 with a 305. I am rebuilding the motor soon and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how I can make some good horsepower from the 305. Cam,Intake,Headers,Etc...? What would you guys recommend? Any help would be appreciated. Also the rear end has 3.73 gears in it and the 700R-4 tranny is built up pretty well. Thanks

If you check the beginning of the Third Gen forum, you'll see a post on how to add 325 horse power to a 305. Read it and see what you think. I've considered performing that upgrade and seems not to be to expensive. Also look for a guy named Sick on this forum. He seems to be very knowledgable with these cars and 305.

in 84 they used both the LG4 and the L69 305's in the z28's the LG9 is a 305HO, fitted with an L81 camshaft, crossfire heads, and a 795 CFM carb with 190 HP. the LG4 is your basic 150 HP 305. if your rebuilding and you are shooting for HP you may as well bore it .060 and get the biggest bang for your buck. get some 305HO flat top pistons to fit the oversize bore. you need to have your heads milled .20 thousands and have them pocket ported, gasket match ported, and 1.94 intake valves installed. the machine work alone is gonna set you back $600 to $800 bucks alone. if your wanting to stay on the safe side keep your cam lift under .480 with no more than .305 duration. anything more your gonna run into clearance problems because of the low deck height and small combustion chamber. your compression is gonna be somewhere around 10:1 and premium gas maybe more will be a must. i have found that the 305 responds better with a vacuum secondary carb. a holley 600 CFM with the mains down jetted to a 62 seems to be dead on. i have tried several different intakes dual plane sucks on a 305. single plane with long intake runners works best. using an igntion box is kinda over kill on a 305. MSD makes a standalone pro-billet distributor thats fairly hot and dependable. when dealing with headers you can take the road most traveled and easiest with shorties but, if your wanting the most go with long tubes. you may have to cut the flanges back some to be able to weld your exhaust to them and still be able to make the turn around the frame but, it's worth it. the 3.73 rearend is perfect. leave it like it is. with these mods you are looking at 300 HP maybe a little more. if you wanna go even further you can get a 400 crank and have the main journals turned to fit the 305. that would give you another 35 CI and probably another 50 HP. good luck with your project.
