Default Looking for a Camaro - Need Guidance

I've decided my next project will be a 1982-83 Camaro, ideally a V8 sport coupe with a/c, no T-tops. My plan primarily is to build or swap the engine, upgrade drivetrain and focus on suspension/braking/chassis improvements. I don't want to get into body work so I'm hoping to locate a solid driver with no rust, decent paint and interior.

I'm new to Camaro's, so I need feedback/advice on any known typical weak spots, areas prone to rust, mechanical issues to be aware of and any other tips, warnings etc. you may have.

Thanks,

Mike

A twenty + year old car is going to have a lot problems. You just have to look at it in person and any on-line advice is not going be of any big help. We can't see what you are looking at.

Thanks for the response. I was hoping to receive some pointers about any problem areas that I should pay particular attention to when I start looking.

Appreciate the help.

Pretty much anything and everything. The obvious things for any car such as undesirable engine and drive train noise, of course. Check the condition of all the fluids, brake operation, consistency of pedal height. Older cars with tilt wheels are a big thing to watch out for. If the tilt mechanism has been abused, usually in the spring loaded collumns common in most GM vehicles, the steering shaft bearings like to go bad, and nobody that I can find still sells the new bearing assembly in my area, at least. I can't think of anything else, but I'm sure there are other things to look for. In any case though, check everything thoroughly, even areas you intend to modify anyway, as problems there can point to an issue elsewhere on the car.

Thanks...I've had my share of project cars that were full of surprises. I'm just beginning my search, I'll know the right one when I find it.

Appreciate the response.

Find a V8 car to begin with. It'll make the upgrade easier and it has the heavier duty pieces made to hold up to V8 Power.

Get the Haynes manual - the cover says "based on a complete teardown and rebuild". That's about what I'm gonna have to do to my 87, l friggin ol

The Chiltons manual is the way to go, it's a bit more detailed than Haynes

Haynes or Chilton, it's a matter of opinion. The manuals are both good.
