Default Idle problems..

1990 RS TBI 305

Generally when i start my car.. it stutters at 5-8 rmp then goes up to 1.5.. and will slowly go down to a nice idle.

Today however.. it was backwards..
It went straight to 1.5 and then it slowly went down to 1k.. but this time when it went to 1k.. it kept stuttering around .5 to 1k... even when i put it in reverse it did this.. and then i put it in drive and it did the same thing for a little while and by the time i came to a stop sign.. its idle came back to a solid 1k. Any ideas? EGR valvE?

It has a brand new fuel pump and i can hear it every time I turn the key.

A mechanic told me it sounds like it's starting rich.. What could be the reason for this?

Is the check engine lamp lit? If it is, pull the trouble codes. Otherwise start by checking out and cleaning the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve. Be careful not to damage it.

Hmm IAC huh? any good way to clean it that you would recommend ?

It's my daily driver. I dont have a code reader yet. I need to get one... It does have a check engine light. Is it hard to just replace the IAC? I just installed the whole intake manifold so.. I don't think it would be too hard?

If you have a paper clip or piece of stiff wire, you have a "code reader"
Click on the "How to read trouble codes", and "OBD 1 trouble codes" links here: https://camaroforums.com/forum/82-92...rticles-33740/
Also, if your TBI hasn't been rebuilt in a long time, I'd look into doing that. It's easier than working on a carburetor.
