Help with my 1985 Camaro

My car is in pretty good condition except when starting it. If I start it then like an hour later I try it will usually turn on, but like over night and when I'm at school so like 6-8 hours it's a pain to start. I mean like it will crank and turn on then shut off a couple second later and I will usually have to play with it or like 5 mins. Does anyone know what could be cause my camero to have these starting problems?

If I understand correctly, when the car sits for longer than 8 hours its hard to start? Give us a few, very critical, details....

1) What kind of fuel system do you have? (TBI,EFI or a carb? What kind of choke?)
2) Explain the process when it 'dies'....does it just shut off, does it stutter? When you restart it, does it fire right up or is it sluggish for a while?

Sounds to me like you have a choke problem, or some kind sensor issue, although I dont know how prevalent they were on a 85

Carb, when it dies it like stutters and sometimes when Im giving it a little gas because it gets to the sitter it's just shuts off. It's sooner thanks that I'm at work and about 2 hours ago I started it and when I left work it turned off once but I gave a little gas and it was fine, in the morning I'll usually take off the air filter and spray some carb&throttle body cleaner and that will make the process faster

Help?

You are still being a bit vague but heres my suggestion....spray the hell out of the choke with cleaner. What kind of carb? Edlebrocks are fairly easy to adjust the choke, Holleys are bit more complicated...

Any smell? Gas fumes? That would suggest a choke issue I would think. If there is no smell of gas in the exaghst I would think it might be fuel filter? Go through the basic trouble shooting does it idle rough or smooth when it is running good? Fouled plugs? Stuck carb float? How old is the carb? Try a some gas treatment/ water remover.

It can be a host of problems, from bad sensors (TPS, EGR solonoid can cause stuttering as well) all the way down to just needing a tune up.....Check for codes, even though its a obd1 it still can give you clue and then go from there.

If you're used to a fuel injection car, the starting problem could be just your technique. You need to prime the carb with a couple of pumps of the gas pedal before starting. That sets the choke (if it's working correctly), and squirts some gas down the carb to start. I've even had cars where it would take a half a dozen pumps of the gas pedal before the engine would start. Are you doing that now? If not, give it a couple pumps, then a couple more if it still doesn't start. If it's still stubborn, look down the carb when the air cleaner is off and pump the throttle by hand. Do you see a healthy squirt of gas? If not, you could have a weak mechanical fuel pump, a partially clogged fuel filter, or the carb needs a rebuild. Since the engine starts with starting fluid, yours is a fuel supply problem, either mechanically or self-inflicted by lack of right foot movement.
