HELP with 89 VAPS ignition . column / key

I bought an 89 RS for my son - it was re-po'd.

They broke the ignition switch and column into pieces in the process.
Apparently this is a 89 with the VAPS theft prevention system, because it
had the clip in the ign key.

I mistakely bought a column and replaced it, and the new one is from an 89
- but I just discovered it doesnt have VAPS. The key doesnt have the chip
-
and the car wont turn over or start. I have the original key and the oem
key for the replacement column. IS there ANYWAY to wire the car to start?
The dealer said they cant make a chip key blank to match the replacement
cylinder, and it obviously wouldnt work - since the column isnt wired on the top end
for the chip. Someone siggested putting a resistor in the two small wires
at the bottom.... - the two small wires connect into a small harness with two other wires
that disappear into the wire loom under the dash....

Ideas?

Car will NOT turn over with switch, can turn over with a remote start buttonm but injectors dont fire.

THANK YOU
Wired the 3.003 resistor (to match key) inline and started immediately!

good deal man, otherwise you have to have a chevy dealer measure the orginal key's resistance. and spending about $100 for the cylinder and key. the key itself is almost $50

RE: HELP with 89 VAPS ignition . column / key

I went to our local electronics shop. He measured the chips resistance, put together a resistor, I installed it between the two white wires
(took about 5 minutes) and its running great!
Thanks to all of you!

take you ket unit with the vats system to radio shack have them check the ohms they are 15 different setting on gme vats system the 2 wires going to the unit fish it down through the columm and solider the restorier one wire to each end of rest, and tire it off under the dash make sure you have the ohms check before you do anything
