Default it grinds

I have a 89 305 5-speed, and it grinds everytime i put it in 5th gear. What can possible be the reason? To avoid grind in reverse and 1st gear I ALWAYS put it in 2nd gear then to 1st and 5th gear then to reverse, for some reason those two gears wont grind if i do that, but its tough to do something like that when going from 4th to 5th going 70 mph. Any help would be great.

Yah I agree your syncs might need replacement. I would first check tranny fluid level however. Just check the easy stuff first before you go tearing you tranny out.

to avoid grinding, when in 4th pull it into nuetral and let the clutch out then put it back in and slide it into 5th. in other words, double clutch.

And then you won't care about synchros, also good exercise for your left leg.

Wow! I'm surprised somebody knows what double-clutching is! In the olden days, transmissions didn't have synchros, and that was the standard way to shift. If your synchros are working well, you don't even need to use the clutch once you get rolling (that's provided you know what to feel for). I don't recommend doing it as normal practice, but if something goes wrong with say the clutch linkage, you can still drive it home.
