Fuel system issues?

So my 92 RS has been sitting probably for a good 5 or so months getting started once in a blue moon while Ive been gone. Now that I am back ive been driving her (gently of course) for about 3 days. The 1st day I filled up the tank and I took her out on the freeway after alittle city driving. I was driving back from visiting a friend and she just shut off on me. I turned the ignition she started, sputtered and died three times before finally turning back on and getting me home. I checked the engine bay out, i checked underneath the car, nothing looks like its leaking and im not throwing SES lights (except for when it stalls or whatever and then they went away after i got it started). She was running rough from day one but I had things to do before I got to where all my tools are to work on her. After that first issue i was able to drive her at freeway speeds for 45 minutes to the place i store my tools and I have been slowly tuning her up as I have time while driving her. Last night I added some seafoam to the fuel and today i changed the oil. She ran alot better but still feels like she is lacking ALOT of power, going up hill i almost have to floor it to maintain speed and my gas mileage has been terrible, more so than when i left back in May. Today after the oil change was complete I went to go pick up my buddy and go to the gym about 20 minutes away. I made it all the way to the gym and it died right in the parking lot. tried starting it a few times with no luck. we pushed it to a parking spot and went into the gym for over an hour. came back and started her. she ran for a couple seconds then died. I started her again and tried reving the engine alil and it would rise in rpms but sputter and lose rpms even with my foot on the gas a little. Anyway, sorry for the long post but I need this old girl to run for about another week when my truck should be here from Kentucky and i can finally start working on pulling the engine out of the camaro. Right now what me and my buddies are thinking is causing the problem is the fuel injectors being clogged from bad gas, possibly the fuel filter or fuel pump but we arent sure because it gets enough gas to idle in park for a bit sometimes but when put into gear it dies almost immediately other times it will just die after a couple seconds of idle

This is a 305? I used to have a 91 RS, this sounds familiar, like a fuel flow problem. When it quits, can you hear the pump cycle if you turn the key off and back on? Even if you can, that doesn't mean you have good pressure. Mine had been sitting a couple years before I bought it. Pump cycled fine, but when I disconnected the inlet line at the TBI (system doesn't have a schrader valve), and turned the key on, gas barely dribbled out of the line. Problem was with the rubber pump to sending unit connector inside the gas tank being deteriorated and cracked. Pump worked just fine, but gas was dumping right back inside the tank. Even with 120k miles, the tank was very clean inside, other than some rubber chunks, and the fuel filter wasn't the least bit clogged. But, you can start with the filter just in case your tank is gunked up inside.

I havent listened for the pump. Ill listen for it when i go back tomorrow morning. Right now i got some maf cleaner and im gonna go to town with the injectors and throttle body. If that doesnt work then ill have to move past the injector/throttlebody and down the line back to the pump

Is this a 305 or V6?

Try changing the fuel filter.....

Camaro 69 Feb 10, 2012 08:25 AM

Yep, as I said above Sparty, you might as well try the fuel filter first. But, if the filter is clogged, that means your tank is crapped up inside, and the problem may very well return.
A clogged fuel filter is not a cause of a fuel flow problem, it's a side-effect (symptom) of a sediment laden tank.

Ok, thanks 69. Its a 305 btw. Thought i posted that last night but it must not have sent.

You're gonna have a heck of a time cleaning the MAF sensor, your engine doesn't have one. Your TBI unit looks sort of like a carb, and has two injector "pods" that hang down. It might not hurt to rebuild the TBI, if it's never been done. They're a lot easier to rebuild than a carb is.
Something else you can try, remove the lid to your air cleaner and see if that changes things for the better. It's possible the flapper valve in the air inlet horn isn't working right, and messing up your incoming air.
This is what you're looking at: https://camaroforums.com/forum/3rd-g...305-tbi-28278/

My buddy recommended i clean the tb with maf cleaner because its less a less abrasive chemical.

MAF cleaner is less harsh, for what it's made to clean. It's not going to cut through gums and varnishes like carb cleaner will, which by the way, isn't going to hurt your TBI at all. I don't see cleaning the TBI helping your problem though, you've got a little more than that going on.....or off!
