fuel pump problems (wireing?)
I am working on an 86 chevy camero with a 2.8 liter fuel injected v6. I have pretty much gone and replaced darn near everything to get it driveable for my 16 year old daughter. My problem is I had to replace the fuel pump and filter in the beggining and it was running fine I replaced the carpet and steering column also because the old one had been pulled on beyond fixing. Since I have replaced the steering column I went to start the vehicle and the fuel pump doesn't come on in the on position of the ignition. I have matched all the wireing with the new steering column to the old and everything is the same. The vehicle after setting a while will actually start but only run for 2 seconds and shut down. I have replaced the fuel pump relay and checked the fuse and can find nothing else that would be causing the pump not to get power. I have even unplugged the wireing outside the fuel tank and checked to see if my pump was bad but it is not getting power back to it. [>:]
Does anyone have any suggestions why the pump is not being called on. I feel it is in the ignition but cannot locate anything relating the steering column to the fuel pump except that it should send power to the fuel pump as soon as you turn the ignition on
. Im pulling my hair out can anyone help please.

Check your oil pressure sensor and make sure it's connected and functioning. I can't remember exactly when they started it, but GM decided somewhere in the 1980's that to cover their asses in accidents, they would run the fuel pump off an oil pressure switch, after the initial 3 second run to prime the system for starting. They did it to stop fuel from spilling onto the road if a driver was unconcious or dead after a bad accident.[/align]
I have changed the fuel pump relay the oil sending unit, the oil pressure senser and it has a new fuel pump I can't figure anything else unless I have a broken wire or computor problem. What next??? Any suggestions????
Your computer needs to send a signal to the relay to kick the pump on for a couple of seconds after the key if first turned on.
And the fuel pumps working through the oil pressure switch has been around befor the 80's. My neighbor had the cleanest vega I have ever seen. It had the electric pump on the oil pressure switch. And everyone always says "liability" but it was my understanding if you lost oil pressure you would lose fuel so not to damage your engine.
