Fix up 92 or sell as is?
 

Looking for a few opinions: I have a 92 camaro RS 6 cylinder. Runs good but needs cosmetic work. New speakers (two aren't working), headliner & clear coat is mostly peeled off hood, roof and hatch. I get offers that people want to buy it. can get a headliner done for $250. Would only be painting the hood, hatch & roof (wouldn't do a crap Maaco but not a 3K paint job either). Would I be smarter to fix these issues or sell as is?

I am not sure anyone can answer that for you. From a good investment point of view there are a lot easier ways to make money then trying to make it on a V6 3rd gen. The question is, do you enjoy it enough and is it reliable enough for your needs to make it worth wild?

If you don't love it and it can go to someone that does, that can be a good thing but if you do they can be hard to find in solid condition and you may regret the sale. As you can see it all comes back to what you want and the condition of your car.

I am the original owner and I LOVE my camaro. I've always had two cars (an heir and a spare) and my other one is a '09 honda with low mileage. I would like to make the improvements I mentioned and maybe even keep it for now. but, what I am wondering is if I get it looking good again, would I get a good return on my investment? If I spend, say, $2000 to spiff it up, would I get that back? like when you are selling a house, put in a nice kitchen and bath and you get that money back on the sale. does it work the same with a car?

I doubt it but who knows for sure. If anyone could truly predict the raise or fall of cars he could be rich. 3rd gens could worth 3 times their todays value in 8 months or 1/2. In my area even well kept V6's don't do well. That is kind of true for all generations of Camaros. They are looked at as swap candidates or as parts cars to fix a V8 cars. Heck that was true for first gens Camaros through the 80's and most of the 90s. Heck I bought a 72 Camaro 6 cylinder for $250 in 1985 drove it for 2 years and as soon as the engine gave me a little trouble I parted it out to fix a V8 car I had.


Check values in your area but IMO if it is a rust free car that is the value. Also you may be very surprised what a paint conditioning specialist can do for that car. I have seen cars that looked ALOT worse then yours look close to new when done.

Third gens just aren't bringing the kind of money yet that would make putting money into it worthwhile IMO, especially given it's just a V-6. Maybe if it was an IROC or at least a Z28 but even then it would be a gamble depending on how much you are into the car to start with and that would have to be not much.

I am back again. keep getting offers for the car (another this morning) and was wondering what ballpark are we talking (they asked what I would want for it). good engine, one rust spot by a wheel well, needs dash (cracked), 2 speakers not working, headliner & paint job. (in NJ).
