does anyone know of a website where I can order a pitman arm for a 91? I have been told that they have been discontinued. or does anyone have one they are selling? plz help, thanks

 

Unless the Pitman arm has been damaged, it is a non-wear item and under NORMAL replacement of the front steering parts dose NOT need to be changed.

 

Just to be sure, you are referring to the arm from the steering gearbox? Ive got one laying around. It came from an 82. I dont know if they are interchangeable. Do the research, if it fits you can have it for cost of shipping.

 

as far as I can tell the pitman arm will only fit 87-92, so thanks anyway.

I have a couple of inches of play in the steering wheel and have figured that it is because of the pitman arm but I can't find a replacement anywhere. could it just be that it needs to be tightened or something?

Are you confusing the Pitman arm with the Idler arm??? A wore Idler arm will result in steering play. Again, the Pitman arm dose not need replacing under normal conditions.

 

I think that's what the confusion is. The steering wear items on your car is an idler arm, inner and outer tie rod ends, and center link. Which all looks like this: http://www.youngsfbody.com/inc/sdetail/7406
The idler arm is that bell-crank looking piece.

 

I had a butt load of play in mine also...my idler arm was SHOT. Thats a quick, easy repair. Id try that first.

 

I'll take everybody's advice and just change out the idlerarm and see how things feel. This is my first project car and I am just starting out, so thanks everyone for the advice and I am sure I will be back for more.

 

All you need to do is run the engine while the car is in park, and look under the car while someone else is rocking the steering wheel left to right. You'll be able to see which parts are sloppy because they'll rock before they move the linkage. It's also not uncommon for tie rod ends to go out as well. It would be better to look so you know exactly which parts are worn, instead of just throwing new parts on with the hopes of it being the right one.

 

20 yr old car and if the steering parts are original, I would not just replace one part at a time. If you plan on keeping the car, I would replace everything and it would tighten up the steering after a ft end alignment. Replaced all my 23 yr old original steering parts on my car with these. After there was a vast improvement in feel and steering control.
