I had an open 3:43 with the early rear disc. I changed it to a later 2:77 with the better caliper set up. From that change launch would be worse but it was not really noticable. What was noticable was the better MPGs. I even run the differences on my desktop drag strip and it made only a very small change in the times

Ive got a 3.23 LSD rear in my 83 and I personally think it is a good balance between highway mileage and bottom end power.

motor is finally completely dissasembled. crank bearings look ok and so do the rod bearings. BUT, i might replace them anyway since im there. All of the bearings are .020 over stock size. i didnt see them in a jeggs catalog. but im sure i can get them at a local parts place that has stuff that autozone and places like that wont.

na, its a steel double roller setup. I asked my dad about it. he said it might be left overs from when it was rebuilt that didnt get cleaned out properly or something.

That may be true. But if so that is pretty bad when you have an engine stripped down to rebuild and **** like that gets left in there.
