Default Cooling system

I have a 1986 camaro with a 350 engine. There is something wrong with the cooling system. The temp gauge is not registering a temperature and the fan is not turning on when the engine is getting hot. I doubt the thermostat is opening up. If anyone knows where the temp gauge connects to and they could tell me that would be great. Also if you know what temp the car is supposed to get to before the fan kicks on.
Thanks alot
Brian

your car fan is supposed to turn on once your max temp of 165-195 have been reached. the thermostat is supposed to open up and then the fan cuts on. I had this same problem with mine and all i did was turn on the ac towards heat or cold didnt matter and the fan would turn on automatically and cooling it off and keeping it cool.

That's incorrect. The fan, if computer controlled, would come on anywhere between 212 and 235 degrees, and it has no connection to the thermostat, which is just a mechanical piece that operates solely on heat and spring pressure. Never below 200, as the car is never supposed to opperate below195 after warmup, since this would put a big hurting on fuel economy. As for the thermostat, it should start to open between 180 and 185, and be completely open, full flow by 195. As for your sending unit, there should be a single pair wire running to the front left side of your intake manifold, running into what would look a bit like an 8mm brass bolt. That's the sensor. Don't take it out when the car is hot, and if you're having trouble with that system, don't even bother leaving it, they only cost like $8.
