carb loading

ok i have a 1986 z28 carbureated it is loading up terrible dumpin way too much fuel. i have recently went to a short exhaust system for racing by removing the converter and hookin the flowmaster staight into the y pipe. now there is a pipe that ran from the converter to the smog system and im wonderin if because it is no longer hooked up the car is gettin an inaccurate reading and dumping more fuel. some one tell me how to fix the rich fuel mixture problem. the whole engine is stock. thanx.

a carb doesn't read anything. it has no device to measure anything ( except a float ) i'm assuming we are talking about an electronic quadrajet smog carb? if this is the case my best advice to you is to get an older pre-smog carb to replace it. you can get a holley/quadrajet replacement carb for about 75 bucks on ebay or probably the same from a junk yard. i can give you the name and number of a reputable seller. if we are talking about a standard pre-smog quadrajet you probably need a kit. you can get one for about 25 bucks. they are fairly simple to rebuild if you take your time and pay attention to what your doing. you can adjust the air fuel mixture by the two front corner screws but what your describing is more than just idle mixture. alot of the smog carbs have the mixture screws sealed and you have to break away the aluminum caps to adjust it. i kit will probably fix the carb that you have but, if it's the electronic quad smog carb it's a piece of junk. thanks man and yes it has all that electrical crap with it i have a few holley carbs here i just need to rebuild and slap em on. would a 750 carb work on this car i am used to older racin motors.

750 is too big . it will be slow coming out of the hole. for a stock 305 or 350 600 cfm vacuum secondary is plenty. anymore than that is overkill. camaros tend to run better on vacuum secondary carbs because of the weight issue. mechanical secondarys work best on a light body. Sick
