Default axle info needed

Anyone know if i can replace the stock open diff with a gm#12471371 28 spline in the stock gm axle housing? I know the old axles will not work because the dia is too small to fit the 12471371 so i also need to find what axles will go in the original gm housing. got this posi free so i would like to make it work if i can
thx

Any 28 spline axle shafts from 10-bolt rear (90-92) can be used as long as the LSD carrier is made for 28 splines. The 10-bolt axle housing was the same for all 3rd gen cars.

Default axle swap

in a pinch you can use 1973-1977 A-body GM
they are 10 bolt 8.5 axles with 28 spline 5 on 4 3/4" bolt pattern 7 /16 x20 studs NOT METRIC like the camaro
you are looking for anything 30 3/8 -30 7/16" from button end to drum machined surface.

YOU could MAYbe use upto 30 1/2" if you have to but the drum will be 1/8" away from the backing plate BUT WILL WORK. Not as desirable...

I think I have a couple on the shelf...but not sure of the spline count...??? PM me if you want me to check. Jim

10-bolt 8.5 will not work ...NO Torque arm bracket.

DUDE... I am talking about the axle SHAFTs... lol NOT the complete rear axle housing...lol.

73-77 A-body GM uses the same 28 spline length axle shaft. WHICH means the rear ends are the same with.

THAT is what I thought he was looking for a axle shaft to slide into his camaro rear end.

HE is trying to go from 26 spline axle to a 28 spline axle in a 1982-1990 rear.

Still your suggestiion about the 73-77 axle shafts is still incorrect...I already answered the OP on what axle shafts he needs (30 5/8) 90-92 3rd gen and NOT some other length as your ideas .

Default 82zcamero posi and axle swap

Correct I am trying to go from 82 stock 26 spline to 28 spline because we have a new in the box gm#12471371 posi from a 92 Camaro we want to replace the original 82 open unit with.

From your responses I believe any 28 spline that is 30 5/16 inches long should drop right in the original 82 housing and with the new posi. I was unsure where to take the measurements from but it sounds like from the c clip end of the axle to the outside of the flange where the drum sets against.

I will look locally for some axles but am open what any of you may have it just depends on cost and shipping charges as always its the $$$$.

I appreciate all the responses
