92 rs wont stay running

hey guys, i have a problem. on my 92 camaro rs 305 tbi, i just replaced the fuel pump and now the thing wont stay running. it will run for a little while but always ends up stalling out. it smells very rich, but the scanner keeps fluctuating between rich and lean. any ideas.

I'm gonna take a shot in the dark and say fuel pressure regulator. Though I've never seen the problem you describe first hand, that sounds like bad fuel pressure.

what check can i do to try and isolate the regulator?

Fuel pressure, both regulated and unregulated. You'll need a fuel pressure gauge, and some wire to jump the fuel pump circuit for the unregulated test, since the engine can't be turning for that test. You should get about 50-60 psi for the unregulated test, I'm not sure of the spec for the regulated, but it's probably available in your Chiltons repair manual (if you don't have one, you should, read my signature.) It should be a fairly stable reading, though. You should also be able to locate the fuel pump relay with the manual, too.

i do have a chiltons. the regulated pressure should be between 9-13 psi i believe. anyway, i am at work right now so i have no pics or even the car with me to look at. where is the pressure regulator located on physically?

i had the same problem with my 89 rs 305 tbi. there could be a blockage in your fuel filter and youll have to relpace it. if thats not it and your car has a lot of miles on it, 120000 or more, you might have to advance your distributor to make up for your timing chain stretching. but if its still stalling out it could be electrical or your ildler control sensor. give me a more detailed discription and i can help you further.

check the IAC motor by unscrewing it and spraying carb cleaner on it. there might be carbon build up. i would start there if it persists.
