87 Z freeze plug fix

87 z28 305 4bl carb. guy told me has blown head gasket. said leaks between head and valve cover. friend said that its most likely the rear freeze plug. no smoke/liquid in exhaust when running. car was stone cold today. put anti freeze in as it was very low. came out later and there is a large puddle towards back of motor area on the ground..thus leading to the freeze plug and not heads. will be doing compression check to confirm. any recommendations..if it is the freeze plug, heard its a pain but can be done in the driveway. thanks

If it is leaking between the valve cover it is not a blown head gasket or freeze plug, I kinda suspect the head is cracked. The freeze plugs are on the side of the block, and they leak down, not up towards the haeds. If it is a freeze plug, you need to able to get to it in order to change it, so this may require for u to remove some other parts. Once you can get to it, it is no big deal. With a long chisel tap one edge of the plug in so that it starts to go into the block. This will force the opposite side out of the block. Then grab the side sticking out with a vise grip and work the whole thing out. Clean the crap out of the sides of the hole and install a new brass plug. Do it gently and easy, as you don't want the thing to fall into the water jacket.

If its coming from between the head and valve cover it may be coming out of the intake gasket.
