Default 82-92 Man V-8 where are they?

Hello, I am prepared to be flames and told how to use the search feature. LOL

I did some searching and alot of the results are for other gen camaros.

I am looking to buy my 3rd Camaro and am learning that finding a Man V-8 is a very tricky thing indeed. I have found several Auto V-8s in my price range, and some well under my range(2k-2500.00)

I really want a manual. Ive owned both before and Manual was much more funner.

So I'm curious how hard is it to swap out an auto for a Man? Or perhaps maybe some of you on here know where I can get a camaro that would meet my year, motor and Tranny requirements?

I did go through the for sale threads and didn't find anything.

I the opinion of those who have done it is it worth waiting for just what I want or is if i can find a camaro for 1k-1500 that is an automatic can I do the swap and stay in my range?

thanks in Advance guys.

5-sp manual with a TPI 305 are hard to find and NO 350 TPI were made with a manual stock from the factory. You may find some underpowered Carb&TBI 305's or V-6's with a 5-sp, otherwise it is going to be a Automactic.

well that really stinks.

So is it worth doing a swap or is the Auto Trans more powerful than a Throttle body 305? I did have a 305 Manual.. I was dumb and young so I sold it before I killed myself. Now Im 31 and want the power with the knowledge of responsible driving.

the one Im looking at is an 83 with a 5.7 350 from a 75 monte carlo. Needs a new Carb and was looking at the Holley Avenger, has a holley 600 now but the guy said it runs lean and needs rebuilt. Hes giving me a rebuild kit, I'd probably just swap new and rebuild and sell the old one.

Here are the range of Horsepowere on 82-92 3rd gen cars.
102/140 V6 manual/auto
145/170 V8 305 Carb/TBI manual/auto
190/205 V8 305 TPI manual/auto
220/245 V8 350 TPI auto only
As you can see not a lot of HP available in that era compared with todays cars.

Myself, I have about 288 HP in my 1987 IROC-Z28 auto which is enough for my daily driver.

If you really want a manual, go for it, but the 83 with monte carlo 350 sounds like a basket case! Start with one that has the least abuse and go from there. It will most likely not be a cheap swap if you go that route, also, after spending a lot of time energy and money to put in the trans and everything else, if it gets mated to a high milage 305 it just not be worth it.

If you are willing to spend 1k-1.5k on the car, expect to pay a decent amount for a decent trans, clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, linkage, new brake pedal, clutch pedal, hydraulic setup for the clutch (if you go that route) Xmember, and keep in mind drive shaft length depending on what trans you select.

I appreciate the help. I guess I need to concentrate more on the motor and not so much the color. lol

These cars are hard to come by, people either want 10k+ for them or they've abused them so much they aren't worth anything.

There is a local one I'm hopefully going to go check out today.

engine is newer with only about 20,000 out of a mid 90's truck..Engine is v8 305 tune port fuel injected and the tranny is automatic

I've seen this one driving around town and have never really noticed any major rust issues, I'm more worried about body work than mechanical work, mainly because I've never done body work before.

Again, as I posted before, be wary of these types of swaps. 20,000 miles may or not be true, plus the truck motor most likely has a different cam that may not be different from what should have been in the car.

I would look for a stock set-up then go from there.

I'm going to thread jack for a moment here- this is the exact line of thinking I was going on.

I was reading the https://camaroforums.com/forum/82-92-general-10/325-hp-305-must-read-1860/ about 325 hp 305. What would be involved with adding a manual tranny to this type of motor if one wasn't already paired up? I have driven manuals all my life and would rather stick with it- much more fun and this will be predominantly a fun build.

PLEASE direct me to another thread if needed, I don't mind reading, but couldn't find anything besides this that really looked helpful...

Thanks in advance

The t5 standard tranny would not hold up to that kind of power very long. You would need to step up to aftermarket 5 speed or t56 6 speed. The reason GM never made the 350 5 speed because the 350 was beyond the torque limits of the T5.

On another note, your should think twice about putting that kind of money into a stock 305. The bottom ends are weak. We had to put a lot of crank kits in stock 305s under warranty. I doubt they have gotten stroger with age. You should think about 350 crate motor. You can get a 275 Hp crate motor for around $1400, that botom end should be good upto 350 hp all day long.

Crate 355 and T56 FTW
