My dad and i have a 68 Chevy C20. Its currently a 4 speed with a SUPER GRANNY LOWWWWW. Hes thinking about putting in a 700r4. The motor is a new ( 2001 ) 350 built for towing. My question is what kinda strength does this thing have when it comes to towing and hauling?

its a work truck still and a few thousand pounds in the back of it isnt uncommen. He would rather keep a stick, but he wants an over drive gear. Anybody have any suggestions on maybe a good 5 speed even?

It would work fine, but, I believe that the tail lengths are different between the 4spd and th700r4, not sure on that though. You would have to get one old enough that is non electronic. Talk to zerokool, he wrecked his camaro with a brand new "racing" 700r4.

 

I would not go with a700r4 in a truck but go with the newer stronger replacment for the 700r4 the 4le60 or a 4le80.
I dont know for sure how to get the overdrive on those working in an older car but with the 700r4 you can put a toggel switch on the colum and run it to the plug on the tranny

but I would also look into an aftermarket overdrive unit I cant remember who built them but I have seen some that bolt to the back of a sm465 and or sm420 so that you can still keep that great granny low if you still want to keep the work ability of the work truck.

idk what tranny is in there. but i know that its SUPER STRONG! its got the whole area for a PTO and all. Its blocked off, but its there. Hes not wanting to spend much money on it, that i promise. ill talk to him and let him know that the 700r4 isnt much good.

I don't see any problem in putting in the 700R4 They are very strong tarnsmissions, and to my knowlendge did not have any problems. Most Camaros (1984 and up) had this transmission. At about the same time, they did infact put them in the Suburbans. (I have THREE Suburbans) Ones' and 86', the other a 91' and the last being a 94' But it still depends on what you want to do though.

 

Hell yes the 700R4s were in trucks. The later 700s are slightly improved and you can get a controler cheap for the TCC which is good to have. The 4L60E is just more electronics as in shift solenoids and pressure switch. Just more crap. The 4L80E is a heavy duty truck tranny and you can get controlers for those also but they are HP robbing due to the extra rotating mass inside. You look at the late model SS pick up and they will have a 4L60E. But when the 700s came out they were bolted up to pick ups with big blocks.
