The previous owner could have neglected the tranny and not serviced it and finally changed fluid after it was too late. Maybe that is why it sat for two years. If you have burnt smelling fluid in a tranny and change it that is not going to fix it. It will just make it go out sooner.

Tranny shops around here will rebuild for around $600-700 for a 700R4. Look on Craigslist.org and in this area people will sell theirs for half that or less.
If the steering column is just loose and its a tilt its common for some screws to loosen. Easy to fix. After doing so many column repairs on theft recoverys and fixing the slop I can strip the coulmn down and put it back together in about 45 minutes.

the steering column is more than loose madmike--man they sure trashed it--ill need to find a replacement assy like i did with the camaro---this car has the 305 w-hydrollic roller cam (carberated)....the vin shows 165 hp or so--my 2.8 shows 130hp--is there a big noticable power increase with the 305---just curious or does the real power come from a 5.7--i want to keep the 2.8 stock and want to see what these things do with their v-8s-what would u do-fix the firebird or sell it and look for a5.7 camaro--if so whick year model???

There is a big difference between the 2.8 and 3.1 Camaros. So I think you will notice a difference in the 305. You are also getting a lot more torque. But there will be more power in the 350 also.
I don't know what you want to spend and what there is out in your area. If you got the car cheap you may be better off fixing it instead of selling and spending more on one that may also need some other kind of work.

the 700R4 is high dollar transmission simply because of the fact that the majority of them are electric. If I am incorrect someone please correct me.
Because I have noticed that 700R4's cost more to rebuild or to buy rather than a TH-350 or TH-400.

Is it just me or is it beginning to seem be epidemic that alot of 700R4's are going out lol
