1981 Stock wheel size and tires
Hi!
I just bought my first car in May, a 1981 Standard Camaro and looking to start years of resto on it... I am just doing research on wheel sizes along with the tires that go with it.
Right now it has 14x7 4-1/2 wheels on it... I am looking to maybe get a 15x8 4-1/2 for now with a Mickey Thompson ET Street Radial Tire at 235/60/15 for both front and rear... Will I need to do any body work around the wheel well to accommodate the wheels/tires or will I be fine?

I have an 81 Z28. All stock suspension.
Right now the front is: 15x7 wheel w/ 235 60 15 tires. The rear is 15x8 wheel w/ 245 60 15 tires. No clearance problems.
I want to go to 17x8 wheels all around w/ 235 60 17 tires. Does anyone know if this combo will work on an 81??

I have a 1979 Z-28 RS Camaro ,When I bought the car it had 15 x 7 Appliance "Turbine " wheels on it.with 235/60R-15 on it and have put a 245/6015 in the rear ,I have run a 16 x 8 and 17 x 8 wheels on it now. With 245/45 17`s front and 275 /40 17 rear on a 17 x 8 wheel with 5 " of back spacing.with no rubbing. So it depends on what backspacing and tire bulge you have,At the very least yo might have modify the outer wheel will lip.because of what tire pressure you go down to.

I have a 79 Camaro I installed 17 x 8 wheels all the way around and used a 245 50 17 tire with a four and a half inch backspacing the fronts fit extremely well and look great in the fender well but the back could use a half inch spacer to move the tire out to be in line with the front

Larry awesome car and wheel tire combo looks great lets add that spacer and get more pics. The earliest 2nd gen camaros have same track width as front although from about 71 or 72 on , gm decided a rear brake change and or altered rear end tubes and this causes the rear to be sucked in , making the front wider than the rear. So yes the track width is definitely narrow by a large amount , imight say. also the narrow rear caused the rear tires to wear extremely quickly putting angular constant pressure on them and then the race cars moved to much wider tires as it needed them. i'm changing my camaro quarters to firebird or other quarters and building them out more putting on large brakes and axle tube extensions with truck arm suspension, pan hard, and link lever, also my engine and trans are getting moved back some inches with firewall mods fox body front coil over suspension and manual rack. i'm selling my front clip to fabricate a 69 Shelby like front end still with an internal bumper .
