Transmission Question
hi all,
I have a 79 camaro that I am dropping a 383 in and also swapping the TH350 with a TH400. My question is this is there a different cross member that I need for the 400 or is the one from the 350 the one that I use. I have searched and cant find one for my year of camaro. Thanks in advance... |
I've heard that the 400 cross member is different. I think the transmission mount perch needs to be flipped on the opposite side of the cross member if my memory is correct. I saw one is picture on nasty I think.
Are you dead set on a TH400? My automatic transmission instructor at Tech school was tell us that the TH400 requires more horse power to operate. like 20-40 ish. How much horse power you expect to be running out of your 383. I would get a well built TH350 and not have to mess with the cross member. Or you buy aftermarket or could just make your own if you can weld any. I'm putting a 4L60e in my 73 and I just finished making my cross member. check my build page for pics |
well the projected HP is going to be between 600 and 700 so I am thinking a TH400 will handle that alot better... I think I am going to use the existing crossmember and move it back a bit and make new holes...

I'm not sure what a TH350 is even capable of safely handling. But your pry right. good luck with your project. you should post some pics so we can see how it turns out?

i think a stock 400 is rated at about 400hp so no matter what trany you get your gona need to have it built up to handle that kind of hp. th400 can be built to good levels over 1200hp. 700r4 can be built to handle 700hp. dont know about the th350
