Default quick engine question?

Hi,

I'm putting together a Big Block 454 to go into my Camaro, I have just noticed a 1/4 inch squre drive round disc, one each side of the block near to the exhaust headers.
My question is what are they for and what are they called?, as i seem to have one missing from my block.

Thanks from Luke

A picture would help, but it sounds like it's just a pipe plug.

Here is the picture from the dipstick side of the block, the round plug is missing from the other side of the block.
Please can you inform me if this needs to be blocked or what should screw into it.

Many thanks from Luke

From that pic. It looks like the head and not the block. It is a water or oil galley block off. Kinda looks 1/4 0r 3/8 NPT.

Yes, those are water jacket plugs and they indeed need a pipe plug in them. Should also have thread sealer on it before installation. The sq. drive is 3/8", and I think the pipe plug is 3/8" or 1/2" pipe thread. Should be an easy one to find, even overseas.
I would guess that other plug is missing because that's where the temp sensor threads in. Might need it if you're putting a gauge sender in the block, so might not have to plug it if yu're putting in gauges.
