Does your crank have a shared key for both the lower timing chain gear and the damper, or are they separate ones?

Ok, then the key wouldn't be walking on you. Speaking of the timing chain gear, it is fully seated on the crank? Where in relation to the outer edge of the damper is the end of the crank when it stops?

What you did works. The gear is barely a snug fit, the damper is a press fit.
When the damper stops going on, is it inside the seal at that point or no?

That's what I'm wondering. With the damper off, take a small long screwdriver (or a stiff wire) and push it in against the gear. Make a mark on it where the end of the crank is. Then compare that length to how long the hub on the damper is.

That's fine, but you want to know how the length of the damper hub compares to the amount of crank that's showing beyond the gear.
No guesswork.
