Fitting a Z28 1978 scoop to stock hood
I know the stock Z's have a U shaped cutout for part of the fiberglass scoop. No idea why, maybe as a future R/A option? Anyhow, is it hard to fit that teardrop scoop to a stock hood? My hood is near mint and I'd rather sell it and buy the Z hood, just can't find one. I have the scoop already. I'd prefer to get a parts Z28 and use all scoops/spoilers, just can't find a deal yet. 1978 Z28's don't pop up much, but I hate the 79+ flat dash.
the 78 scoop wasnt even a functioning scoop. the fender louvers were but not the scoop, it was the same hood as the standard hood, just had the scoop bolted onto it, if you open your hood you can see the pattern, i am planning on doing this to my car when i get a scoop, but i'm going to cut out a hole and make it functional lol.
I know it wasn't functional, but when I looked at two separate '78 Z28's, they had a small cutout, 5"x8", in the hood. Here is a pic of one I found, you can see the NACA shape removed. This is exactly what I want, I don't know if it is just a clearance hole for the scoop?
I don't see a cutout on stock Z hoods, just an indent that's under the scoop. I've seen several late Z scoops bolted on flat non-Z hoods. Never heard of anyone having a problem bolting them on. Just make a paper template off the Z scoop, and mark all the holes and outline of the scoop. Then lay the template on your hood and tape it in place after careful measurement. Then drill all the holes and bolt it on.

Perhaps the ridges are there to catch any water leaks or moisture between the scoop and hood (should you get any), and the holes to allow it to dry out? That's my best guess.
The cut outs in the hood were put in place to give the 'scoop' a 2" height but, only rise up from the about 1" from the true hood plane. The so-called scoop actually sat down in a little bit of a recess in the hood. Chevy went to a lot of trouble for a non-functional sccop. The only Gen II Camaro with a functional scoop and hood opening were the 80-81 Z.
The 80-81 have an actual hole cut in the hood over the air cleaner.
