Engine stamp
Hello everyone - my son and I picked up a '76 project two weeks ago, it cam with a 400 sb casting 330817 - T1010CSU - I'm having difficulty decoding the stamped numbers on the pad - 161125850 ? I cannot find a source to understand these digits, I can only presume they are part of the VIN from the original car, believed to be a '74 Chevelle. Looking forward to being a part of this forum with many questions to come.

T=Tonawanda engine plant, 10=assembly month. 10=assembly day. CSU=1974 400 c.i.
1=Chevy. 6=1976. 1=Oshawa, Canada vehicle assembly plant. The last 6 digits is the partial vin of the car it came from. These two sets of numbers weren't stamped on the block at the same time, engine assembly stamp came first.
This 400 block casting was used between 1970-1980. The numbers are saying the engine was assembled October 1974 (which would normally be for a 1975 model car), but installed in a 1976 vehicle. Unless that 6 isn't really a 6.
Either way, since the new model year cars rolled out around August, this engine would NOT have been from a 1974 model car.
