Default does anyone know what gears came stock in a 79 z28

okay so ive been restoring my camaro for about 3 years now and its my first car im seventeen and we put the motor in it on my sixteenth birthday about 4 hours after i got my license. but anyways i wanna put a different gear in the rearend for a harder launch and plus i just want a true posi instead of that old one legger but i was just wondering what gears came in it stock. heres how it was stock. 1979 camaro z28 350 4brrl 3 speed automatic. but you now i am bringing it back to life and stock just wont cut it anymore so if anyone knows what gears came in a 79 z28 stock i would greatly appriciate it. ive been looking online and no help so i figured this would be the next best thing.

I think theres somewhere on the axle you can look. I think it's supposed to be on the forward facing passenger side. I was trying to figure out what gears I had, but I couldn't find it because it's too dirty.
Here's a site that has good info on our cars.

thanks man i appreciate it but the only problem is i have to have the code for it and i cant get it cause i dont have my car its in paint. lol but thanks to you i can narrow it down to 3 ratios 3.08, 3.42, or 3.73. that really helps because i thought it might have like 3.55s thanks man

Not so sure you can narrow it down to any certain gear, as you don't know if the original owner ordered it with the fairly std. 3:08, or went for the 2:74 or 3:73 ratio. Back then Chevy still gave us options.
When you get the car home again you can jack it up and turn the driveline one turn and see how many turns the axle does. Of course you're limited as to what gears you can put in it, depending on what ratio it originally was.

well it has a lot of factory options it has power windows a/c 8 track and alot of other stuff so i wonder if that will help but what ever the gear is it cant be that high because its not launchin that hard at all. i was thinkin about goin with either 4.10s or 3.73 true posi im tired of havin to try to get it to lock up someone told me if you put it in reverse and then give it enough gas to break the tires loose then it should lock up im going to change it out eventualy but im just wonderin what is in it.

There was only two ratio's available for the 1979 Z28. Tha auto got the 3.42, the 4 speed cars got the 3.73. No other options were available.

The ONLY way to know what you have is to look at it, either by opening it up or giving it the twirl test. Gear changes are not uncommon, so going by a code only tells you what might be or used to be in there.

Agreed., but the OP asked what came stock with the 79 Z28, and that was the only two ratios available.

Thanks, but if you go back and read all his posts, you'll realize that he wants to change his gears. And he is trying to find out what he has, so that he can know where to go from there.
It was more than just a trivia question that was being asked.
