B.M: i thought it might be the fuel filter but how can it get clogged i havent figured it out yet....
Z28pete: i was told that it was caused by the harmonic balancer.... shows how much these mechanics know about classic cars

Through the years small bits of dirt and other things will get into the gas tank, plus as old as these cars are and with metal gas tanks, rust can build up inside the tank and small bits can flake off and get sucked into the fuel line. You may have 2 filters, some have a filter in the line, and a filter in the carb right where the fuel line connects to the carb.

So you turned the engine over by hand, or cranked it with the battery, and you can see the gear isn't turning? The gear is on the end of the cam. If it isn't turning, neither is the cam. A lost timing chain would be the next suspect.

i cranked it like i was going to start it and dive... i took the distributor out of the engine block and the gear on the inside that turn the gear on the distrributor wasn't turning. so what i might have to do is get it towed from storage and spend a weeked taking the fron end of the engine apart... FUN!!!!!

sorry but its hard to tell if your talking about the gear turning when the motor is turning over or not. so when you had the distributor cap off did you turn the motor over to see if the rotor (plastic deal on top that shows when cap is off) was turning? its very rare for the timing chain to break, ive never heard of it happening on a sbc. jumping a tooth yes but a broken chain no.
