back up lights stay on!!!

Default back up lights stay on!!!

I am a first time user here, my wife and I aquired this one owner 1978 camaro, 350/ 4 speed, the problem is, that the back up lights will not go off so we had to disconnect them, does anyone here know how we can fix this pesky problem? thanks in advance!

its a wiring gremlin prob the sensor that tells the reverse lights to turn on is sticking

The backup light switch on the 4spd cars is in the steering column. There is linkage that extends forward and up, attaching to the column. When you shift into reverse, this turns the collar on the column actuating the switch. The automatic cars use the same setup only it also actuates the steering lock. Worn components can cause it to not disengage the switch. I would check for proper operation of the system see if it affects the lights. Disconnect the rod from the column and rotate it by hand see if the lights go out. I removed the linkage from mine to install headers. Back up lights aren't a priority of mine.
