ok so my car hesitates and has a slight popping miss sound around 2000RPMS and under load. i gaped the points to .016 and have it at 9 degrees BDC. im going to take it back to 4 and do another drive. but it does have a miss u can only feel while driving it. any ideas?

ok. so i figured it out. carb was setup retarded. back when it was installed and all blocked up with an air pump and all. the secondaries wouldnt open. so in an effort to help it out i removed the restrictor ball to try and get it to open. still wouldn't. whats happening is the car now has the right vacuum and the ball was out of the path so it was flopping the secondaries open when the load and vaccume was right. i replaced the ball and installed a lighter spring and had the same bog. so i replaced the stock spring and im going to give it a test drive tomorow but im sure it will fix this.

it explains why at 3K rpms it leans out while in neutral and pops because only the small primaries on my 600cf are fueling it up to that RPM. it got better the richer i made it so now i should be able to tune it right to the rpms that the secondaries start opening and let it help from there. i got a new diaphragm and spring kit to help me out so i will be doin a little tuning soon. but i think this is the main cause of my load bog. and miss.

All those little details. I'm sure you'll work it out bit by bit.

... im confused. i think my timing is wrong. is rotating the cap while the vac is unhooked the same as setting initial timing? or is initial timing setting it in a tooth back?.... im all confused now.. my vac guage says i have late timing but its set to 9 BDC with the vac unhooked..

You have to disconnect the vacuum line to set timing, but be sure to plug the open line or your timing will be way off! Usually 4-8 degrees BTDC works, but depends on your compression, etc.

... yeah. ok. so i plug the line with a cover and my timing mark is set at 10. gonna move it down to 7 tomorrow cause i hear thats a good sweet spot on 305s but i will still play with it. but that mark is correct initial timing. correct?

Yea, stick a golf tee in the end of the line when you pull it off the vacuum advance. That's the only timing you can really check. Just set the timing with the line plugged. Then reinstall the line on the distributor and set the dwell angle with a dwell meter by turning the screw on your points, (if your distributor has points!).
