It's pretty straight forward, just get a set of cork gaskets and throw them on. i don't think there is a special way, it's real easy.

Trick is to not over over tighten.

Trick is to keep them in place while you install them! I use very thin thread from my wife's sewing machine to tie through the holes and hold the gaskets in place. I trim the strings once they're tied, and just leave them in place after tightening, as they wont hurt the seal.
I also use the spendy rubber sandwiched gaskets with metal shims in the middle to make them more ridgid. I've had excellent results with no leaks. They cost about $16 on my big block, but are less for a small block. |
I've fought too many times before with trying to keep the valve cover gaskets in place. That's why I like the aftermarket valve cover hold downs where you screw the studs into the heads first. It dowels the gasket in place. I also prefer the silicone rubber gaskets to the cork, for their stability and re-usability.

+1 on using studs. And silicone gaskets too.

never had a prob with the cork ones, they are real sturdy and fall right into place for me
