Wherever possible I'd try to use patch panels, unless you end up patching more than half the panel or part. If you can cut out the pillar piece and patch one in I'd go that route.
I bought a cheap Harbor Freight sheetmetal brake for making small bends for patch panels. I got the 30" to do larger stuff, but they have one that's around 18" that would be great for most sheetmetal patch bending and it's under $40 if I remember correctly. The 30" was $59 on sale, and has come in quite handy on my gasser to build the floors and firewall.
