Default starter problems help!!!

ive got a 1976 camaro with a 383 stroker and i have the stock starter and a gear reduction starter. now the guy i bought it from said he started it with a regular starter and it blew teeth off the flywheel and the starter was deystroyed. when i got the camaro it had the stock starter in it intact and operational but he said to put the new starter in so i did but it doesnt fit correctly because when i go to start in the fan spins but it makes a grinding sound like the gears arent alining correct. so i looked again and the bolts dont take the starter flush against the block so i think it is chattering and moving and running into the flywheel instead of meshing with it. i put the orighinal starter back in and the bolts took it all the way down flush against the block but i havent tried starting it in fear of wrecking the flywheel and starter. which starter should i use???

I've just bought a 1976 Camaro with a 383 stroker and i have the stock starter too.
What you recommend for me , I noticed few issues with that. Although the car is in a good condition, there is need for 'updates'.
What to do?

Maybe there is a problem with spark plug or battery. Or the fuel filters might be clogged.
