spot welding
 

Has anybody here tried to use a spot welder for attaching body panels , i'd like to try to spot weld as much as possible when i install new panels on back of car, or should i just mig it in ? i was thinking on buying cheap spot welder. I was looking to try to save some preptime by not haven to punch alot of holes andnot having togrinddown all the mig welds. thanks

Well if you cut the hole, you could use the mig welder to weld around it and it would semi look like a spot weld.

If you get a spot welder, I suggest you do a lot of practice on scrap metal before you go around burning holes in your car. Go to your local library and borrow a book on spot welding.

We had a spot welder in the body shop but the large jaws would not fit every where. We would use an easy grind wire (I think it had a high alloy content) and just a quick buzz with a rolox grinder with 40 grit and it was done. wire feed welds dont have to be huge if you do it right.

The few times I do it myself I have to do a mig. I can't weld wortha damn. But I've gota guy that has spot welded some of my mess and it turns out great. But I certaintly wouldn't want to try it.

thanks everyone ,i figured i'd have to mig weld [spot] in hard to get to areas. if i get some extra money ,i might buy a 230 volt spot welder , practice alot and read a book or two, if i get it i'll post pics using it. http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/mac10p...illy/my_photos
