A friend of mine put an auburn posi unit, richmond gear set,and moser axles in his rearend and his car is pushing close to 700 horsepower,it's a drag car so it gets alot of abuse and it's held up good for quite a while now.

Yeah,he's got the stock 8.5" housing,i did forget to mention though he also added a beefed up rear cover, but yeah he's ran it very hard at the track for a few seasons now and has never had any issues.

As far as 81's having the 8.5 i think they do,but i'm not positive,i'll have to check around and see what i can find out, since i recently bought an 81 i'd like to know to.I know my 80 had the 8.5" but i'm not sure how to tell just by looking at them.

well if the 80 did, then the 81 probably did.But if you can find out for sure that would be sweet its gonna be like 800 to add a eaton posi, richmond gears and moser axels. would that be all i need to handle 500hp?

You can easily build your 10 bolt to handle 500hp, and for much less than a 12 bolt too.
Here's few things I'd recommend:
1-Change the axles out to a good brand, and with an outboard bearing C-clip eliminator kit to relocate the bearings into the brake area. $160 kit. Axle prices vary.
2-Install a Power Trax Locker kit. $328
3-Install a rear housing cover with tensioners. $160

With these changes you can easily run well over $500hp and not have trouble. In fact the rear end cover isn't necesary for 500hp. I haven't run anything but the stock cover for 20+ yrs. and no problems. My rearend has C-clip eliminator kit with outboard bearings, Dutchman axles, and Powertrax locker. Nothing more.

Where'd you get that outrageous price?
Moser axles are $244 a pair for a 10 bolt. Their C-clip kit is $149, and the Powertrax locker is $328. That comes to around $725 at Summit Racing, at today's prices. Somebody's stroking you at $1,000!
