Default putting a 454 in a Camaro

Is there a difference between a 454 in a truck and a 454 in a car.

Would I be able to fit a 454 from a 1978 Chevy 1 ton into a 1977 Camaro without any or alot of modification?

i would think that there would be no problems as long as you got the engine mounts from the truck to put in the camaro

Would the transmission in the car (I think its a 350 not sure) be able to handle a 454 or should I take the trucks trans and put it in the car too.

Would the trans from the truck fit in the car?

I doubt that the transmission would work unless you beefed it up a little bit. The transmission out of the truck should work in there but then you're going to have to switch over the trans brace and have to worry about the shifter lining up with the hole in the floor and if it's longer or shorter then you will have to buy a new driveshaft. But putting the 454 in the car could also cause things to move back or forward.

what kind of transmission is in the truck?

If you prefer to have an automatic best bet is the TH400, most 3/4 and 1 tons have them, steer clear of the 700 or lockup torque convertor type, I forget exactly which one it is, the early models had lots of problems. One interesting mod is installing a switch like a micro switch on the shifter, floor mounted is better in parallel with the passing switch solonoid that the 400 uses normally mounted to the accelerator pedal so at about 3/4 or so like when you floor it to pass it will downshift electrically from whatever gear its in before the govenor kicks it up. I used this very mod on Jag/Chev conversions. The 350 is not really heavy enough even for a stock big block wheras the 400 has unlimited mod kits out.

As per your original question about installing a big block in a Camaro it depends on the depth of your wallet and your fabrication skills, search and you may find complete kits just for that motor. A truck 454 is fine but afterwards you will want to change it around a bit cause the motor is setup for low rpm, so an intake manifold, carb, dist upgrade would be advised. Me I would look for a wrecked late model Silverado with the 8.1 496cid 340 stock horsepower engine. I currently have it in my dually and though its a gaswhore it has tons of torque and power!

Biggest differences between almost any car/truck motor of the same engine class is usually the fuel delivery system like the carb, manifold and timing factors, the problems I always had putting an oversized motor in first off was strong enough motor mounts, exaust routing and cooling and finally the accesories mounting. Big blocks by nature have more bottom end torque so consider what driving you will do with it, cruising? quarter mile wannabe? or just a lot of noise? Or show? if show there is not much more than making a statement of having a supercharged big block all chromed up.

I'm gonna do this same thing, I'm talking with a guy right now about buying the 454 out of his rv with 60k miles on it. I'm thinking all I'm going to have to do is remove the old engine mounts out of the camaro and find some bb motor mounts to put in there. I'm thinking maybe a taller hood, but other than that I'm pretty sure everything will fit around it.
