Hey guys,
So I finished replacing my clutch this weekend, but now I have another problem. I cannot put my car into 1st, 2nd, rev, yet It FEELS like I can freely put the shifter in 3rd and 4th, yet it is not in gear. I don't want to drop my tranny, unless I have to, but does anyone know what might be wrong?

Did it go back in the way it came out? It's easy to get the shift fork levers on upside down. Double check your clutch adjustment. GM instructs 2-2.5 inches of free travel at the pedal, as per the '78 owners manual I have. I went to about 3.5 inches after I got it run in. Also, what style pilot bearing did you install? bushing or roller bearing?

 

I thought that everything was returned the way it was. I have a pilot bushing, the clutch pedal is has enough free travel. Now that you say it, I'll check the shift fork levers. I honestly could not see where they connected to the transmission when I removed them, that's how gunked up they were. Probably 1/2" worth of grease/dirt I scraped off.

 

I'd be questioning the pressure plate and clutch to whether it was identical to the one removed. Also check the linkage to ensure you got things back together the same way. Might need to get the car up on jackstands and have a friend push the clutch in and look at things to see if it's operating correctly. Check linkage travel and function at the same time.

 

you did'nt grease or oil the pilot bushing when you put it in did you?

 

No I did not. As soon as I have time this weekend, I'm going to look at the shifter linkage, the starter, and see if the clutch is working properly.

 

yeah u might wanna do that,just see if it looks like it working properly,but i think ur gonna have to take it back out because something defenatly aint right,good luck,hope everything works out it sucks having to do it twice.
