I'm new from to the forum and camaros. I still don't have the car it was previously my uncles but he had to many projects on his hands so I asked him to sell it to me and he said yes! I'll have pics in a little but I have a quick question it is a 79' z28 camaro and the question is if the differential on these cars burnout on both wheels or just one?

Depends on whether it has posi or not, and if it's got enough power to "burn out on both wheels".

Yes! Put a floor jack under the rearend, get both tires off the ground, then put trans in neutral, turn one tire by hand, and if the other tire goes the same direction it has posi. If the other tire goes the opposite direction, it's a pegleg.

Another question......aren't these cars supposed to have the power to burnout on both wheels aren't they part of the "muscle car genre"?

 

Z/28 was just a name mostly. Power levels were pretty low compared to earlier Z/28's, and in most cases less than half of what the namesake was in the early 70's. In very good condition they could still lay dowbn some rubber, especially with a stick tranny, but if they get a little tired it would be tough to lay much rubber with a posi rearend and some wide tires.

 

no not really especially the era of second gens from about 1973 on up yes they still have v-8 power but thanks to all kinds of smog laws and government regs they ended up getting pretty weak power wise by the mid seventies. small displacement low compression engines loaded with emmisions crap.
on the other hand if you really want to do burnies then you could even do it with a car powered by a 6 cylinder. but to tell truth burnies on the street only get you in trouble and cuase you go through tires super quick.

I had a friend with a tired '78 Camaro that tried to power brake it, and the car would twist and raise the rearend, but as you eased off the brake to get it spiining it would just eventually take off, and never get the tire spinning! Pretty funny!

 

Okay thanks for clarifying........so if I wanted to have a camaro that beats the ricers in my streets would it be better to upgrade the stock engine performance or right off the back get a new motor for it?
