New guy here, just bought a 81 camaro
How are you doing? I was wandering if yall could please help me out here. I just bought a bone stock 81 camaro with 305. It runs fine but I did bypass the computer and put a edelbrock 650 carb and a non computer dizzy in. It cranked right up and runs fine and I havent driven it yet because I have read about the tv cable from the transmission HAS to be hooked up? Now is there a kit made for the 1406 edelbrock carb? I have looked on summit and seen a few but dont really know what or wich one I need. Second the computer is still in the car, does it control the tranny at all? and if so how. I read on a few threads that it only controls the lock up on converter. If so cant i just leave the computer in and it will still control that? Or what should I do.. Sorry to write a book, ive allways had 68,69,and 70 dodge chargers and this is my 1st camaro. Thanks for any help.
Come on guys anyone? I know its a pain to answer something that has probabley been talked about on here over and over, but I really cant find anything on here that relates to my question. Im just sitting here waiting on advise you may be able to give. Me and my 17 year old son are building this car together any help would be very appreciated.
Welcome to the forum! Your TV cable can be hooked to the carb with a universal bracket. They are cheap, and just need to get it adjusted properly by checking travel on the carb. Is your tranny still a TH350? If so it doesn't have a computer connected, and it needs this bracket to hook up the cable:

If it's the original trans,it will have the th350c,81 was the first year for that tranny, which included a lock up converter. As far as how to run it without the computer control,i'm not sure,i never made it that far on the one i had,but i think they sell a small wire harness type thing that will control it.
Ok so it does have a lockup converter? Im confused... I think im gonna yank out the 305 and put a 350 in. Will a 350 out of a 88 or 94 chevy work as long as I put a basic 4 bbl carb on it? And if so whats a good tranny that will match up or should I just use the one I have? Also rearend, i want at leat 355. gears and possible locking. Any rear end out of late model trucks, cars or vans work with out any mods? say like 1988 and on? Really want to fix this car up and my budget isnt all that well. Sorry for all the questions just ready to start this build.
Thanks
Thanks
I know exactly what you mean on the budget,i'm in the same boat, mine is very tight.I did some searching to see what i could find about the lockup on that tranny.I read that you can either leave the wires unhooked and just run it as a non lockup,or you can manually control the lockup,to do this there is a plug with 2 wires, one positive one negative, run the negative to a good ground and run the positive to a toggle switch and then you can lock the converter while cruising on the highway, etc.
Another option is you can usually find a regular th350 on craigslist pretty cheap, just make sure the tail shaft is the same length as yours as there are a long and a short tail shaft. As for the 350,as long as you put a carb and manifold it will work fine from those years. The rear end,as far as i know, there are no other vehicles that have a rear end that will fit these cars, agin a great option is to check craigslist, there are alot of people parting these cars out,and you could use a rear end from any 70-81 camaro, firebird,or trans am,i see posi rear ends from these cars on the craigslist here all the time for around $250 or so.

If you use a motor from a 1987 or later car or truck, the 2 center bolt holes are different on the heads and intake manifold. On the pre 87 they are go into the head on an 90 degree angle but the 87 and later heads have bolt holes that are straight up and down(about a 23 degree angle) and have the valve cover bolts in the center. You'd either have to get the right manifold or modify your manifold for the 87 and up heads. Then if you use vortec heads from a 96 or later truck, they are different again. They don't have the 2 center bolts and the other 8 are also straight up and down. They are very good heads as they flow very well without porting. Just be aware of the differences when you look for the new 350.
good deal B.M I couldnt really find anything on the lock up converter. As far as the 350, Like I said i dont know a lot about the chevy as I have allways dealt with mopars. I know alot of people try to pass off a 305 as a 350, any way for me to really know which one is a 350? and I do want a 4bolt main. I found a 1977 chevy full size truck for 1,000.00 thinking I could pull the 350 out of the truck then put the 305 in the truck and turn it and get my money back out of it. Finally I did find a rear end posi out of a 76 camaro on craigslist for 125.00 but it has 245.gears, How much of a pain is it to change ring gear and pinion to like a 373?
