Need power for switch during ignition. Help
I am currently working on my 79 camaro installing a momentary switch and relay in line with the starter. My problem is during the starter phase the power the switch connects to cuts out. Is there a source that won't cut out during the ignition phase?
To give insight, I am doing this as a sort of anti theft deterrence. Thanks for your time and suggestions! |
Let's see,
Red wire in power from battery Purple wire to starter solenoid in START Pink IGN 1 to coil Brown ACC power in IGN and ACC Orange IGN 3 power for fuse circuits - those accessories needing IGN power command, i.e., aftermarket radio, etc. Hope this helps. |
Is there a ground wire?, thought that might be safer to switch and will do the same job

this is a hidden switch so you can have a hidden kill switch so its harder to steal in that case i would tap into the primary feed for the blinkers behind the fuse block
pull apart the fuse block its a good sized wire this is where you get constant key in on and crank but not in the off position how you gonna hold a key and a monetary button at the same time? also i just have a on off switch in mine |
I would place a relay on the starter wire to break the circuit. Use your switch to energize relay
Get a good quality relay Cut purple or yellow wire at steering column Terminal 87A and 85 goes to starter wire from column Terminal 30 goes to Stater wire towards starter Terminal 86 goes to ground, Take one lead from switch and connect to terminal 86. Take other lead from switch and go to ground. When you flip switch nothing will happen and no drain on battery. When someone tries to steal car and ignition switch is turned to start position, relay is energized and starter wire connection is opened so car will not start. Once ignition switch is released no drain on battery. |
