Default RE: Need help understanding rear ends!!

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh! Well, that make a lot of sense now, thanks for your help guys! So, how hard is it to pop off the rear yolk? Just a couple of bolts here and there?? Oh, and fyi, every ring and pinion set I looked at online for a 197810 bolt 8.5' rear has a pinion spline of 30.Soooo, maybe mine's 30?? But I think the right thing to do is to get under my car, get dirty, and find out what I have woohoo!

Thanks for all your help fellaz!!

Just remove the four bolts the hold the rear u-joint on. Pop off the joint and drop the shaft to the floor. Be careful not to let the end caps fall off and knock out the needle bearings. The yoke nut is on with about 200 lbs. of torque, so you'll need to brace the yoke with a bar so it won't spin while breaking the nut free. Then the yoke will slide right off.

If you have access to an air ratchetlike the ones tire stores use, it will make the job of getting the pinion nut off easier. I believe thesocket size is 1 1/8 or possibly 1 1/4. Youll still need to use a bar for a braceas Camaro 69 said above.

I dont know how stuck you are on the Eaton brand, but this one is considerably cheaper in terms of cost, but (in my opinion) just as good if not better than the Eaton.Do some research, ask around, see what other people think. http://www.jegs.com/i/Auburn+Gear/109/5420108/10002/-1
I installed this one in my 70 and it kicks *** at the stoplight. Havent had a single problem. You probably have C clip axles, but if not, you may be able to get the less expensive one. Im not sure about the "special bearings, cone and race" with that unit, but all you need is a good master bearing set (Timkin bearings) if you go with theAuburn gear limited slip. The Richmond gear set you are looking at is a great choice, but the pinion spline is a 30, so you should make sure its the right one before you buy it. If your axles look bad, I put these in mine, no problems here either.. http://store.summitracing.com/partde...p;autoview=sku The main center posi thing is actually called a "carrier".
