Check out this controller. Should give you the best of both worlds, for just a little more than a manual valve body.

Start a post in the 1st gen forum, or you wont see many answers in somebody else's post about tranny.

I have 3.73s and would like a good OD trans for highway driving.
I think I need to do more research with hands on. The info I found on LS1 and other sites was that the LS engine had one less mounting hole for the bellhousing than the SBC and BBC., not one more. They appear to have a total of 5 with only 4 lining up with a SBC/BBC pattern.
From looking at bellhousings for sale it appeared that the LS1 had the same dowell pins, with bolts above and below the pins, then just a center bolt at top middle. The SBC and BBC have a total of 6 bolts with the same dowell pin and bolts above and below, but one more on each side.
Here's an LS1 bellhousing:

And a SBC bellhousing:

So what am I missing here that I can't see more than 5 mounting bolt holes for the LS1? If it's just the dowell pin and 4 bolt I wont trust them. Doesn't appear to be enough to me. Or I'll go with the earlier that matches the SBC/BBC pattern.

yeah val according to ls1 tech only 4 bolt holes match up,thats why i decided against the ls1 4l80e too, with the horsepower im putting out i dont trust it,easier just to use the earlier one then no spacers or custom torque converter is needed.

just fyi, I use a th400 on my car and I make pretty damn good power and I'm not concerned.

The 4L80 is essentially a th400 with overdrive, its a VERY strong tranny

But, did you catch this in the description: "The multiple shift modes include a full manual mode for using bump or paddle shifters. The TCI EZ-TCU automatic transmission controllers allow for maximum electronic control over shift points, shift firmness, and shift speed".
I like the automatic/manual adjust-ability option of the controller. Not to mention, if you set it up with a manual valve body, you still need to wire a switch for the torque converter lockup. Leaving the t.c. unlocked is not an option.
I've been wanting to put a built up 700R4/4L60 in my car, but now I'm getting more convinced that the 4L80E with the controller would be the slick way to go.
