Default A little help for a car newb.

Ok so I have some questions, most likely very stupid ones so I'll just get into it.
Ok so I have a 77 camaro and I'm working on getting it registered so far everything runs pretty smooth but I'm trying to figure out if it will pass emissions or not. I have looked around online but I cant seem to get a straight answer on if the 77 camaros came stock with catalytic converters, and if so where would they be located under the car. And if not is it even realistic to look into getting one installed? Any help will be helpful, thanks in advance.

My 76 was not required to have them, but it did not have to do the emissions neater. What state do you live in? I would ask some of your local shops about the cats as they can get kinda pricey unless you get some from a salvage yard.
Just a heads up.
Driving a second gen camaro every day dose wonders for your self esteem.

I used to own a 77 Camaro that I bought brand new...

77's did come with a large catalytic convertor (1).
I believe it was directly under the passenger floor board.
Nowadays convertors are much smaller and yes you could get one installed.

If it's still single exhaust you can get a universal cat installed, but if it's been converted to duals you'll need one for each side. Any muffler shop should be able to help if you can't do the install, but the price will be way higher than what you can buy and install.

Ok so I took a better look under the car and found the converter, I still need to jack up the car to get a better look but from the looks of it it feeds from a single exhaust pipe into the converter then from there it splits into two exhaust pipes. Now would that be considered a dual exhaust or technically a single? And either way does it matter?

You have a single exhaust with dual outlets. "Dual exhaust" would be one separate pipe from each exhaust manifold/header all the way back. So no, it doesn't matter.

I think you are looking at the muffler not the cat. The muffler would have one in and two out.

Yes, if what you saw is above the rear axle, then it's not a cat, it's a muffler. Where was the component you saw located?

Fyi, they do make single in/dual out cats, who's to say his exhaust is original. If what you're looking at is a cat, the stock location is beneath where the front passenger's feet would be.

The 77's have a Y-pipe from the exhaust manifolds to a single cat. After the cat is another Y-pipe and the the exhaust splits to dual mufflers and tail pipes.
Mine (77 Z28) still has the OEM Y-pipes and cat.
