The 124,900 is actually a very small number if you compare it to 1969 or 1971. I think there were over 200,000 built in 1969, and around 155,000 in 1971. Just going from ememory.
Based on this 72 still looks like the year gm took it in the shorts.

1969= 243,085
1970= 124,901
1971= 114,630
1972= 68,651
1973= 96.751
1974= 151,008
