Hey guys I need help adjusting my Carb.
 

I have a 74 camaro, with a 350. I just replaced the carburetor on it. It did have a like a 700 or 750 holley not sure exactly what size it was but it was running way to rich and caused the car to smoke pretty bad. I bought a USED 1406 600 cfm edelbrock carb. Just put it on, I have read around on how to adjust it, and on the fuel and mixture screws you are supposed to run them down til the car drops idle, and back them out til it stops raising in idle. Well i tightened them both all the way down it NEVER dropped idle. The idle screw is backed all the way off but the car, wants to idle around 2000 to 2500. The throttle isnt even touching the idle screw. Am I doing something wrong, or did I get ripped off on the carb. Also I dont think it makes a different but took the choke off of it. Need advice asap thanks.

Sounds like an vacuum leak. Check your hoses. Let it idle and hose the intake down with carb cleaner around the gasket area, if the idle changes its an intake gasket. Is the carb tight? Not so tight you break off an ear. Did you use a new base gasket?

yeah, a agree with nomad, check all of the vacuum lines, and spray carb cleaner at the base of the carb, if all of a sudden it fixed the problem, u either have a bad gasket, or the carb isnt tight enough on the engine.

Did you check the base gasket before you installed it on your intake? It could be that your butterflies are contacting the gasket and keeping the throttle partway open. Try pushing cloed on the throttle arm on the carb and see if it closes. If it does you better take it back off and be sure that you get the right gasket.
The wrong gasket could also cause the above emntioned vacuum leak. Always lay the gasket on the intake and check, then lay it on the bottom of the carb and check that before installing.

Hey guys thanks for your help, I think I got it figured out though. When we took the choke plate off, i guess you are supposed to wire the mechanical parts of the choke open. I was playing around with it and was messing around with the choke, and opened it up for a second and the idle dropped significantly and it died lol. But I wired that open and it seems to be doing fine now. So if any of you guys ever experience anything like that on an edelbrock 1406, remember you cant just take the choke plate off and expect it to be fine, you have to have the whole deal open! Thanks again.

I have never had a reason to remove the choke plate. I've got a manual choke, and don't use it in the warmer months, but it's nice in the winter for a cold clear day's startup!
