Default Help with my 67 Camaro

I have a 1967 camaro project car, and I have some questions for the experts!

1. I think the VIN was originally on the metal plate rivited to the frame behind the drivers side door. It is gone, is there another location for the VIN?

2. It has SS decals and markings, but how do I tell if it is really SS or RS?

3. It has a big block, not original. Is there a number that will tell what it is?

Thanks!!

Default RE: Help with my 67 Camaro

on Camaro's there is no sure way to know if its a SS or RS or Z/28
an RS will have hideaway headlight covers but that can be changed, but most dont go as far as moving the back-up lights, on RS cars the back-up lights are below the rear bumper
check out this site there is a lot of info here

There are a number of clues you can look for to determine if the car is or was an SS. First of all your VIN question. Yes, the VIN tag was riveted to the forward door jamb on the driver side. The VIN number is usually stamped on the firewall but it can be hard to see. Look right under the heater blower motor hole on the passenger side. Mine is stamped there and it's upside down but you can read it. Replacement tags can be had (with verification that it's legit) at http://www.datatags.com/ (not cheap but good quality).

To determine if your car is an original SS check the cowl tag In the lower left section of the tag look for the number 4P if your car was a small block SS350. 4K is the 375 HP 396 motor big block SS. There other "4_" codes but I don't recall the exact codes. These codes are explained well on some good web sites. One good one is http://www.camaros.org/ but there are others. The 4P code was used on some early specially equipped 327 cars but those are very small in number. And the 4P code wasn't used at all in the early SS350 cars so if that code is missing you might still have an SS if it's a very early built one.

Also, look for signs of other SS equipment. The plate in the floor board for the traction bar is under the passenger side rear seat area. That plate has two bolts that go through the floor board as mounting for the traction bar bracket as well as a corresponding hole in the side of the frame rail. 3 bolts ( 2 top, 1 side) were used to mount that bracket. If the plate is on the floor board it's one more clue.

You might be able to determine for certain that your car was an SS, maybe just the likelihood. Good luck.
