Default Gas problem?

Hi, this is my first post, I just got my 1980 rs today and have started on the first problem, the engine isn't getting gas. You can prime the carb and it will fire up then die as soon as the gas is burned up. Could this be a carb issue? The guy i bought it from said he thought the carb needed a rebuild. The car has been sitting for about 4 years. I also am planning on cleaning out the tank before trying to start it up again. Let me know your thoughts, thanks!

If the gas isn't getting to the carb,it could be a few different things.Could be a bad or clogged fuel pump, clogged or broken lines,or the outlet from the tank could be clogged up.After sitting for 4 years there is probably alot of gunk that has formed in all of those though from gas just sitting in there.By the way welcome to the forum, you picked the right type of car too, these old camaro's are a blast to drive.

Welcome!
First thing I'd do is reemove the fuel ine from the carb and have someone crank the engine as you hold the eld of the line in a can to see if it's pumping fuel. Then I'd check the fuel filter. Depending on what carb you're running, it could be inline, or in the inlet to the carb. If all this checks out, then I'd remove the carb and rebuild or replace it.
If the car has sat a long time the gas needs to be removed from the tank, and fresh fuel put in before attempting to run the engine, or all sorts of bad stuff will plug up the fuel system.

Thanks guys, it sounds like i have somewhere to start now, is it okay to check if the if the car is pumping fuel by pulling the fuel line out of the carb before cleaning out the tank? I have a factory 231 with a 2 barrel on it.

You could try that, but it will probably pull more gunk into the fuel pump, which is still better than pulling it into the carb, but it still may cause more problems, although the good thing is the fuel pumps for these cars are fairly inexpensive,i think you can get them at the parts stores for around $30 if i remember right.

There are many OTC drugs that can help you with your problem. Also eating right staying away from spicy or greasy foods. If all else fails just let one rip, LOL!

Yes, you can crank the engine a bit to see if it's pumping, then stop before pumping too much. Once you've determined the issue, you should pull the pump and wash it out anyway. The lines should be flushed and blown out with air too.
