Default gas/exhaust smell in car?

-ve got a 77 camaro and it smells like gas and exhaust inside my car. There anything I can check? My wife and kids don't like riding in it due to the smell.

check for leaks in your exhaust and check for fuel leaks. Any fuel leak will leave spots on the floor unless the leak is really tiny or is burned off by the exhaust. Exhaust leaks can be found by feel (do when the exhaust is cold) or by sound. You might want to check the condition of the weatherstripping at the back of the hood. If it does not seal fumes from the engine bay will be drawn into the cowl vent and into the cabin.

Do you have an aftermarket fuel pressure gauge in your car? I know old and new cheap oil gauges have an oil line that runs to the gauge but I don't have knowlege on fuel pressure gauges.

I had the same problem last year.

1. DO NOT LET YOUR KIDS RIDE IN YOUR CAR! The fumes are toxic and can really affect their health.

2. Check for a fuel leak.

3. Check for an exhaust leak from the headers (or manifolds) to the tail pipe. The best way is to raise the car and take a really good look.

In my case, I replaced the entire exhaust (except for the manifolds). That didn't seem to help completely then I found I had a fuel leak around the top of the tank which was driving a crap load of fumes into the passenger compartment. Once I replaced the fuel tank, I made sure the lines were good to go. Finally, I checked for holes anywhere in the car and sealed those up. After that, you should be able to ride in your baby again w/o smelling its waste.

u can usually hear if it is an exhaust leak, if the hole is too small to hear anything with, you could retard the timing with the cap and rotor and listen under the car for the miss, it should be louder in the area with the hole, i knew mine had a hole bc of the loudness and smell, little did i know the entire aft part of the exhaust system was none-existant lol
