Would just taking out the cat and replacing it with a piece of pipe make it sound any better?

ok i have an 81 camaro with a 350 V8. im going to get a dual flowmaster exhaust set up. does it really make a difference in performance and sound to just get the flowmaster mufflers instead of the complete flowmaster exhaust system?

The sound will be about the same. Performance gains between exhaust shop pipe vs Flowmaster pipe depends on your engine. The difference is the bends in the pipe, Flowmaster is 100% mandrel bent. That means where the pipe is bent there is no necked down area. The diameter of the pipe is true to size, this allows better flow. If you have a mostly stock 350 the gains from mandrel bent pipe may not be noticable. But if you have a fire breathing stroker it would be more evident.

oh ok JR thanks. which flowmaster muffler should i get if i want to keep the deep agressive muscle car sound? the super 44 or super 40? they both seemed to have the deep muscle car sound from the clips on the website. what do you guys think?

oh and i want to increase power in my 81 camaro 350V8 but i dont want to get to race car like because i want to keep some reasonable gas mileage lol..what order should i add some power adders like super comp headers, a perform cam, flowmaster exhaust, and a perform distributer(and maybe hotbox)? like what order would be worth it the most and cuz im on a tight budget and cant do more than one at a time lol

I have the 40 series PN 942541 on my car, love the sound.
If you have to chose, I would go with headers and exhaust first.

A lumpy cam is great but your engine would not perform well with one unless you bump the compression a bit. Don't get me wrong, you would see a performance gain by installing a cam and lifters but nothing like you would if you build the engine to make use of the cam profile.

I would do the ignition last, not much payback in power for the money. On mine I just upgraded the factory HEI with an MSD unit. Fits in the original distributor and still has the rev limiter built in. I get all the spark I need with a hot HEI coil that I added.

ok thanks JR. the super 40 and 44 mufflers sound almost the same in the sound clips. is there a big difference between them? ok then i will get the headers and exhaust first ohh ok what else would i have to do to the engine besides bump the compression to make the best use of the cam? yeah i was thinking of just getting the upgrade kit for the factory HEI too.so it was easy to install? what do u mean by hot HEI coil, like a MSD one?

how do you bump up the compression anyway? and i decided on just getting an new MSD HEI distrubuter and plug wires instead. is that a good choice?

and what is a fire breathing stroker?
