Engine? SMOG :(
 

Hey guys, I live in Cali.. I have an 80 camaro. I have a 305 laying around that passed smog. Should I put it in the camaro to pass it through smog then pull it and put in my bigger motor which is being machined? The bigger motor is not guaranteed to pass smog. However the 305 should. I pulled it after my rs passed smog with it. Essentially I could drop in the 305 and have her running and registered and smogged this weekend. What do you think? Just wait it out and risk it, but only drop it in once. Or put the 305 in and smog it so I get 2 years without worrying about it? I just miss driving my Camaro.

if you have the time and you are curtain the other motor wont pass then i say go for it, at least you can drive it right away ;)

Well California sucks for smog. You cannot "legally" swap the engine or modify the car. YOu have to use CA smog legal approved heads, headers, manifolds etc. You might be able to get away with putting an engine that was made with that year. The z28 I have came with a 305 originally. Just so many hoops to jump through.

Well, if the new engine isn't going to pass inspection, that's pretty much your only option, isn't it?
Unless they'll let you push the car through the testing lanes without an engine in it (yes...I know they won't).

The smog laws allow you to put a newer model year engine in an older model car, but not the other way around. The newer engine, when installed in an older car, has to meet all smog regs applicable to the model year of the new engine. All depends on how much the inspector really cares, but may want to check before doing all the work.

I hope everything went ok with your 305 swap. Maybe you can offer me some advice? I have a 79 I need to smog, but the previous owner ripped all the smog stuff off except the pcv valve.

So, I bought an AIR pump, egr valve, smog charcoal canister, stock intake manifold, stock exhaust manifold, carburator, and air cleaner cover. Only problem is, I'm having trouble finding the hoses/valves that hook it all together. (CHilton and Haynes manuals only have "typical Chevy" engine pics, and the assembly manual is not much help either.)

Any advice?

I might be able to help. When I pulled the engine I color coded all the hoses so I can take pics and show you. I might even have some pics before and after pulling it. There are tons of hoses.
