Default Catalytic converter plugged?

(1979 Z28- 350bbl)

Yesterday this car was running sweet.... Today I have to keep the gas pedal down to keep it running. After doing this for about 3 minutes, smoke starts to roll up from behind and down below.the distributor.
If I get underneath the carit looks like smoke is coming off the whole exhaust, not out the exhaust. I can see nothing leaking on the exhaust to generate the smoke. I really have no clue what it is, and just threw out a guess that it was the converter.

Good possibility, the innards fall apart, get blown into the exhaust and clog things up. You may want to habve the exhaust pressure tested before taking things apart.

If you have one of the old pellet style they melt inside and plug it up. Does it have a big burmned spot on it? Unbolt the down pipe and start it and see how it runs.

I was afraid you would say that, but I wanted to ask any of you if you thought my guess was correct, or at least within reason.

I think Mad Mike is correct. Your going to have to seperate the converter from the engine and see if the power comes back. Good Luck!

Oh, so do I, I just didn't want him to be. This is a welded exhaust front to back. I just didn't want to drop the downpipe. It's either that or gamble & sawzall the pipe in front of the converter. I'll drop the downpipe
